Six suspected members of a new militant outfit modelled after the Jamaat’ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) have been arrested in the capital, police say.
The arrestees were planning to kill a cleric in Dhaka, says Dhaka Metropolitan Police spokesperson Muntasirul Islam.
The Detective Branch picked up members of ‘Mujaheed of Bangladesh’ on Wednesday evening.
They are Zahirul Islam, Khandkar Rajesh Subhan, Abu Bakar Siddique, Abraham Ahmed Al Tarek, Morshedul Islam and Kazi Bappi Ahmed.
DMP’s Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam later told reporters that they had been conducting “militant training exercises” around Gazipur’s Bangabandhu Safari Park area.
“They used pseudonyms on Facebook to evade surveillance by security agencies and to communicate with each other,” he added.
Islam said they used to recruit members and collect funds through Facebook.
Motijheel police have filed a case against the six.
